Talk: How does your digital data footprint contribute to environmental impact? - BNSS

Event date: 19th September 2023 at: 7.30pm via zoom

Speaker: Professor Tom Jackson

The growth of digital data and the use of digital technologies are contributing to environmental pollution and climate change. The data industry is projected to produce more emissions than the automotive, aviation, and energy sectors combined. The focus on physical decarbonization has overlooked the environmental impact of digitalization, including data generation and storage, including emails and digital photo, leading to a significant contribution to global emissions. Professor Tom Jackson, at Loughborough University, has over 20 years of experience in research and industrial consultancy, including pioneering work on the dark side of Digital Decarbonisationand has worked with various organizations such as the UN’s Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and global automotive manufacturers.
