Shooting stars represent the death throes of remnants from the ancient solar system, and so studying them offers a chance to add to our knowledge of our deep past. In this talk I plan to explain what meteors are and discuss ways amateurs can affordably observe them to provide scientifically valuable data, some of which we can analyse ourselves with freely available software.
