A lecture by Dr. Michael Everett. Dr. Everett’s lecture is based on his book ‘The Rise of Thomas Cromwell: Power and Politics in the Reign of Henry VIII, 1485-1534’ (2015), which has effectively rewritten the subject of Cromwell’s early years. Dr Everett is the first historian for 60 years to read all of Cromwell’s letters in the original and he argues that Cromwell was not the ‘brains’ behind Henry VIII’s divorce (as has been previously argued) and that his importance has been exaggerated by previous historians.
