The Sumatran Rhinoceros Tooth on display was collected by Alfred Russel Wallace, the famous explorer and collector and contemporary of Charles Darwin.
The now critically endangered rhino is thought to be extinct in the wild, with only small numbers held in captivity. Although a large mammal, it is the smallest living rhino reaching a height of 1.5 m, a length of 2.5 m and weighing between 500-960 kg. It has a short bristly coat and two horns, which it uses to pull down food and move through tropical forests.
