Antarctic Bottom Water, the coldest and densest on Earth, has long shaped the circulation of the deep ocean. In recent years, however, it has become thinner, warmer, and fresher, with slowed movement northward likely due to increased Antarctic glacial meltwater. Scientists are documenting these shifts and predict continued thinning and warming, changes that may disrupt ocean patterns and add to global sea level rise.
